The program, “Graffiti Free NYC”, offers free graffiti removal services to communities across the five boroughs in New York City. Property owners or authorized representatives may submit a waiver to the City to allow authorized personnel to clean graffiti from first or second-story facades.
This site is a project done for my class GIS in Health and Planning at Rutgers University. Its purpose is to look at the graffiti in New York City by using Geographic Information Systems to try to see the effectiveness of the government’s cleaning services.
The coverage of the data includes all of New York City from August 2008 to August 2009 in which a total of 92, 926 graffiti works were documented by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY). All the data comes from the web site, NYC Data Mine (http://nyc.gov/html/datamine/html/home/home.shtml). The reports and resolution actions varied between boroughs. The maps I created display the distribution of graffiti locations, the response times to clean ups, and a comparison to other upkeep problems reported in New York City.
